Pencil Vs Camera - 60 by BenHeine Pencil Vs Camera - 60 by BenHeine | Facebook | Twitter | © Ben Heine

No more violence! This work is dedicated to the 5 killed and
125 wounded people in the recent gun and grenade attack in
Liège (Belgium). Weapons are useless. I ripped the paper and
held it in a different way so that it works with my drawing...

If you wish, you can view the work in progress (part of it)
and some random detail here.

My Pencil Vs Camera works are now featured on CBS News.

Just the idea of having a useless pistol with the end of its barrel drooping down like it's melted is powerful enough. But to me I find plenty more to like about this: the angel stopping the violence, the rough feel of the background, and even the security cameras feel like they add an effective touch. Well done

"Weapons are useless."

What about using weapons in self-defense?
Moosplauze Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
What about no need for self-defense?
QuantumInnovator Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012
The day when there's "no need for self-defense" is the day when you enter Heaven (provided you accept Jesus Christ as your savior).

Until that day, people without weapons will be at the mercy of people that do.

If Jesus had a weapon, do you think he would have used it against his opponents?
QuantumInnovator Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012
No, but I'm not Jesus, and neither are you.
Moosplauze Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
Well, Jesus is a common name in many countries, so how would you know..
QuantumInnovator Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012
"Jesus is a common name in many countries."

Well, if I can meet this Jesus, and he can turn a glass of water into a glass of milk or some other liquid, then I'll concede you're right.

But, here's something to keep in mind-there are times when violence IS the answer. If the United States "turned the other cheek" when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States would cease to exist.

More recently, there was a case where a twelve year-old boy had to kill his stepfather WHO WAS ARMED WITH A SHOTGUN by shooting him in the head. Click here to learn more. If Nicholas Boleware had "turned the other cheek", instead of one dead body, there would have been two dead bodies. At least. As Nicholas Boleware put it, "He ran towards my mom like he was going to strike her. I shot him. I had no other choice." If you have any questions about this story, e-mail Allison Manning at

What if YOUR life was in danger? Wouldn't YOU want to live, even if that meant your assailants would get injured or killed?
Moosplauze Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
I can turn water into tea and you don't even want to know what I can turn the tea into afterwards.

Did you realize that your example situations when weapons are needed (in your opinion) wouldn't be real if there were no offensive weapons to begin with? If Japan would have just visited Pearl Harbour without weapons, there wouldn't have been a (proclaimed) reason to drop 2 atomic bombs killing numerous cilians and if his stepfather wouldn't have been armed with a shotgun there wouldn't have been a reason to freaking shoot him.

Civilized people don't need weapons, at least no offensive weapons.

Really great work, in many levels, but "Weapons are useless" ?

As clearly illustrated in the above piece of art -although perhaps not as intended - the monochrome naivety of notions such as "no more violence" is restricted to a layer of fantasy that, no matter how well presented, will always contrast with the polychrome that is the real world.

I love how you used your gift in this work to speak against violence. Too many people are robbed of their lives by guns, other weapons, and acts of violence. We need to remember that life is sacred.

I've been wondering. Do you sketch the pictures before you take the photo, or do you take the photo with the paper blank and sketch digitally afterwards?
Because if it's the former, I... I'm at a total loss for words... :jawdrop:

What you did here is really amazing! It´s not only the way you always manage to combine a drawing and a photo, but it´s also the message that is behind this one!
Ariehenix Featured By Owner Jan 14, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I love these pencil drawings you do. All of them are fantastic. This one, however, is my favorite by far. I love the message, because I so totally agree with it. Everywhere in the world there is this violence, and it needs to stop.

this one is amazing
i like the idea of the picture
and how did you draw it
1o11y9o9 Featured By Owner Jan 2, 2012  Student Digital Artist
Just how long does it take you to draw a picture like this? I've often thought that you'd have to draw it in a matter of seconds, because the things that you draw it onto couldn't stay still for much longer. For example, you might be able to get the girl to stay still by telling her to, but you couldn't tell the dog to stay in that exact same position for long, and the boy in this picture doesn't look like he's been told to stay in a walking position. Unless, of course, you put the drawing in after you took the picture. But that still doesn't explain how you got it to line up like that. Unless you took the picture of the boy, then took a picture of you hand with the paper, and then moved it around using editing magic.
I like the sad face on the gun. :D
borneojoey Featured By Owner Jan 2, 2012
I love the concept but I do not agree in disarming the lawabiding citizens.
Kitchen knives and matchetes seem to be the weapon of choice when a crime is commited in anger. The police can find your muderer but you must protect your own family.
over9000ninjas Featured By Owner Dec 30, 2011
Although I believe that guns have a place in the law abiding citizen's toolkit simply because the genie can't be put back in the bottle (I'm about solving practical problems, not trying to implement ideology,) this is still a very well made piece of art.
