Pencil Vs Camera - 60 by BenHeine Pencil Vs Camera - 60 by BenHeine | Facebook | Twitter | © Ben Heine

No more violence! This work is dedicated to the 5 killed and
125 wounded people in the recent gun and grenade attack in
Liège (Belgium). Weapons are useless. I ripped the paper and
held it in a different way so that it works with my drawing...

If you wish, you can view the work in progress (part of it)
and some random detail here.

My Pencil Vs Camera works are now featured on CBS News.

Vs Camera pictures in progress (with original music).

Amazing, expressive and a true work of art.
This is what real art is all about. It is full of love and passion for art that lies deep down in the heart. the artist clearly, and simply delivers the moral of the picture in such a way that a child could understand. it's very inspirational, and heart warming. it is like nothing that i have seen before in an artist. Firearms are not useless, I have some for hobby use. It's stress relieving to spend a few hours at the range.

Either way, I do love the detail and meaning you put into this one because there are still evil people in this world that kill for evil purposes. And the fact that there is a child walking there adds a different/deeper level of importance.

An amazing piece, the idea to end the violence is something I also would like to see someday. This really makes me think about the stories I read about online or see on television. Thank you for this contribution, will add this to my favorites, love all of your work.

the little guy has a halo :) And I like that the little boy has no idea what's happening. It happens everyday...innocent people harmed because they were completely unaware of the danger

I absolutely love how the little guy that's stopping the gun is an angel! Anyone else see the halo above his head? And how in the world can you hold a piece of paper like that?

Just the idea of having a useless pistol with the end of its barrel drooping down like it's melted is powerful enough. But to me I find plenty more to like about this: the angel stopping the violence, the rough feel of the background, and even the security cameras feel like they add an effective touch. Well done

"Weapons are useless."

What about using weapons in self-defense?
Moosplauze Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
What about no need for self-defense?
QuantumInnovator Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012
The day when there's "no need for self-defense" is the day when you enter Heaven (provided you accept Jesus Christ as your savior).

Until that day, people without weapons will be at the mercy of people that do.

If Jesus had a weapon, do you think he would have used it against his opponents?
QuantumInnovator Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012
No, but I'm not Jesus, and neither are you.
Moosplauze Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
Well, Jesus is a common name in many countries, so how would you know..
QuantumInnovator Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012
"Jesus is a common name in many countries."

Well, if I can meet this Jesus, and he can turn a glass of water into a glass of milk or some other liquid, then I'll concede you're right.

But, here's something to keep in mind-there are times when violence IS the answer. If the United States "turned the other cheek" when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States would cease to exist.

More recently, there was a case where a twelve year-old boy had to kill his stepfather WHO WAS ARMED WITH A SHOTGUN by shooting him in the head. Click here to learn more. If Nicholas Boleware had "turned the other cheek", instead of one dead body, there would have been two dead bodies. At least. As Nicholas Boleware put it, "He ran towards my mom like he was going to strike her. I shot him. I had no other choice." If you have any questions about this story, e-mail Allison Manning at

What if YOUR life was in danger? Wouldn't YOU want to live, even if that meant your assailants would get injured or killed?
Moosplauze Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
I can turn water into tea and you don't even want to know what I can turn the tea into afterwards.

Did you realize that your example situations when weapons are needed (in your opinion) wouldn't be real if there were no offensive weapons to begin with? If Japan would have just visited Pearl Harbour without weapons, there wouldn't have been a (proclaimed) reason to drop 2 atomic bombs killing numerous cilians and if his stepfather wouldn't have been armed with a shotgun there wouldn't have been a reason to freaking shoot him.

Civilized people don't need weapons, at least no offensive weapons.

Really great work, in many levels, but "Weapons are useless" ?

As clearly illustrated in the above piece of art -although perhaps not as intended - the monochrome naivety of notions such as "no more violence" is restricted to a layer of fantasy that, no matter how well presented, will always contrast with the polychrome that is the real world.

I love how you used your gift in this work to speak against violence. Too many people are robbed of their lives by guns, other weapons, and acts of violence. We need to remember that life is sacred.

I've been wondering. Do you sketch the pictures before you take the photo, or do you take the photo with the paper blank and sketch digitally afterwards?
Because if it's the former, I... I'm at a total loss for words... :jawdrop:
