Fish Bird

A poem by Katie Gabrielle

Be the first on your block
Hurry up!
Tick tock!
It goes with you everywhere!
Soars way up high
In the air!
Fish Bird
With the pop out eyes
That reach the skies
And fins like a fish
you wish you wish
You had
Fish Bird
Go ask Mom
Go bug Dad
Grab the keys
Start the car
Don't be a nerd
Buy Fish Bird!
Better than a dog
Better than a cat
Imagine that!
Bring a smile
To a little kid
Buy Fish Bird!!

In short: wow! I had no idea what to expect when I started look at Ben Heine's "Pencil vs Camera" series of works. With an intelligent and clever blend of photography with graphite pencil drawings, these pictures range from the humorous to the political.

In this one, (no. 48), Heine has made the pencil drawing seam into the photograph really well, maintaining a sense of perspective as he reinterprets and reinvents some part of the landscape. The effect is fantastic, as it is original. Just the act of holding the piece of paper there while taking a photo must have presented physical challenges that were not small. It is good to say that the effect has achieved a great deal and works very, very well.

The contrast between monochrome drawing and colour photo also develops the focal point, centring the attention on the drawing. It is only after that I started to explore the picture more and discover the continuation of the photo through the drawing. The drawing itself is simple, well executed and maintains the sense of perspective very well.

I really love this picture, and its zany sense of fun. This is one of the most original pieces I have seen in a very long time. I can only hope that Ben Heine keeps making more.
