Pencil Vs Camera - 28 by BenHeine Pencil Vs Camera - 28 by BenHeine

A little hole in a piece of paper and a minimalist drawing, I took the photo this afternoon.

One world meeting another, imagination versus the blurred and strange reality...

I was sort of inspired by Plato's "Allegory of the Cave": Plato imagines a group of people who have lived chained in a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire behind them, and begin to ascribe forms to these shadows. According to Plato, the shadows are as close as the prisoners get to seeing reality. He then explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall are not constitutive of reality at all, as he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows seen by the prisoners.

The Allegory is related to Plato's Theory of Forms, wherein Plato asserts that "Forms" (or "Ideas"), and not the material world of change known to us through sensation, possess the highest and most fundamental kind of reality. Only knowledge of the Forms constitutes real knowledge. In addition, the allegory of the cave is an attempt to explain the philosopher's place in society.

In Pencil Land

A poem by Katie Gabrielle

Just an ordinary day
In pencil land
A strange hole appears
And they blame it on the hand
"Oh it's that artist again!"
"He keeps teasing us and
Not sure which came first.
Did he draw us first, then
show us that color world?"
Are we real or is that real?
"Almost like Alice and
The looking glass, so
Why not just on through
Or go on past!"
The color world can be
Bright and true.
Better to be color
Than black and white.
Dreaming is fun for Alice
Life can be mighty boring
When you all look the same
But when you have some
Jazzy color you can
Blame the artist
So talk to the hand
In color land

Dream Days

A poem by Peter S. Quinn

Dream days here on
Filling the moment's air
Reality is now gone
Only now dreams in here
Thru every dimension
Always for more and new
Perceptive comprehension
Whatever we come to do

Dream thru the reality
Nothing is now clear
Times are currently free
There’s no place or year
Only a dream in a dream
Moving in our evolution
We only in mirror seem
Like reflecting resolution

Dreams of our own deep
Inside an abysses space
Only the instances to keep
In playful of many ways
An apparition that is laid
Like desire in some mind
And we have called it fate
That has our life assigned

The concept is very interesting. I guess my mind is so in the box that I wouldn't have preceived what it meant without your comment. I was just thinking that it was a neat mix of mediums.

Regardless, with the artist comment in mind this piece brings a whole world of ideas into mind. It was a great use of both traditional art and photography. I especially like the idea of making the real life blurry.

All to often we go through life without stepping back to take a look at things. So the fact that art captured by pencil could do this is just so profound.

There is nothing visually outstanding about this deviation, but I think that the concept surpasses that anyways.

I believe that someone with this talent of using both art and life, will succeed in life of knowing greatness. True art with a unique feeling. Even though it's great anything can be improved! I congratulate this person. I adore your imagination my friend! Because you show something new and likable my friend, but I hope you could live for ever to keep showing your brilliance an imagination to this world. You Impact the world and show your brilliance and skill. I congratulate you, for showing and being someone to stand out in the boring world, Thank you for being magnificent and standing out in the crowd!

Okay, I don't think anyone has asked this and I truly feel like it's a trick on the eyes in a way.. But it looks like the blurred picture is actually -moving-? If you had that intent and it is moving then I'm sorry for being captain obvious. Also..I realize how long ago this work was made but I just have to know.

My AP English class just read "Allegory of the Cave" a couple of days ago. I found this piece a few months back and just re-found it today. Needless to say, I'm seeing both the piece and the essay in new light.

Your concepts are such a great idea. I am a self taught drawer/sketcher never really had no formal training. Unlike you I haven't been driving my creative expressions I stopped trying. However, when I saw your photos I was inspired. I guess lately I been caught up in the corporate life. Eat, sleep and go work in a sense that's what this picture is reminds me of. We are all focus on what's around us that sometimes we just need to open our eyes and see things in a whole new perspective.
