Making of - Julian Assange by BenHeine Making of - Julian Assange by BenHeine

(Download/purchase a much bigger version to see how it is made)

Made with thousands of "@" symbols (the common "At sign" typographic character). It took me a few days of work. I applied each character one by one and used several references for the accuracy of the portrait. Each symbol is made of a single color and tone. (I left the portrait unfinished on purpose, I think it's better this way).

"@" like "@mbitious", "@ctivism" and "~SSange"... Julian is a courageous man fighting for Justice and Democracy despite many criticisms...

Julian Paul Assange is the founder, spokesperson and editor in chief of WikiLeaks (a whistleblower website and conduit for news leaks). He is also an Australian publisher, journalist, software developer and Internet activist.

wow, this is amazing. I do portraits as well, but have only managed black and white ones that actually look as real as photos. I know how hard it is.... I'm blown away that you can add such accurate colour. Do you use the actual photo as a reference (like on photoshop where you click on the photo colour and then use it ? Sorry just interested. I've never even attempted detailed work in colour, let alone with '@' signs. Also, it's good that you put photos of it's development. When i have done really good b+w portraits i'm always paranoid that people will think it's just a photo, ironically, the better it looks, the less people assume it's your work! Speaking of the development photos. May i suggest (just my aesthetic opinion) that the 3rd last picture looks the best . You're right in leaving things unfinished, but i reckon that actually looks better as a 'finished, unfinished piece' than the last one....(final work).
Respect @ ya!

p.s I'm a big fan of Julian Assange, your pic was advertised on twitter by another wikileaks fan!

justice or fame? there is something to be said for social responsibility as well - i'm not saying i disagree with you and his intention - but he does seem a bit fame whorish as well
