Santorini also known as Thera is a volcanic island located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast from Greece's mainland. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago which bears the same name. It forms the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km2 (28 sq mi) and a 2001 census population of 13,670. It is composed of the Municipality of Thira (pop. 12,440) and the Community of Oía (pop. 1,230). These have a total land area of 90.623 km2 (34.990 sq mi), which also includes the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi, and Christiana (all part of the Municipality of Thira).

Santorini is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion, destroying the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island, and leading to the creation of the current geological caldera.

Just a dream in the far-off glow
Drifting in time's infinity
Gleaming mist in horizon slow
Everything comes there to be

Weaving the ocean on and on
Dreams of its being in trance
Till those hours forever are gone
On to the color verve blanch

Daydreams of the evening sky
Playfully giving and waking
Reaching to dusk Greek lullaby
And to memories forever making

Breathing and torching leaving day
As it goes on to the night
In every shade and feelings play
That for a moment has flight

Like love boat on oceans past
Traveling on to the evermore
Times on the hillsides are lost
Thru its wandering on to shore

Billows that play in the deep
Giving and taking of their feel
Some instances is ours to keep
Before they again become unreal

Just spent a month in Greece, and loved Santorini! Beautiful isn't it?

Ik was ook in Santorini begin augustus (op eindejaarsreis met school)
wij zijn met zo een boot naar het eiland gevaren, het is daar echt heel mooi.
Deze foto is overigens heel mooi. Ik vind dat de kleuren achter het eiland goed de sfeer van het eiland weergeven!
